For the most part, it’s best known as the centre of all of Britain’s political decision-making, and thousands choose to tour the Houses of Parliament every year.
The borough began its expansion when Edward the Confessor built the royal palace just outside the walls of London along with the Abbey which was finally finished in 1065. In 1066, the arrival of William the Conqueror brought with it the new tradition of crowning kings at Westminster Abbey, a practice that still goes on to this day! Almost 450 years later, in 1512, a fire desecrated the palace, and since then it has been used as a meeting place for the Lords.
When the new building became a meeting place for the Commons in 1547, the palace’s transformation into the Houses of Parliament was complete. With such a new community growing up in and around the borough, the need for a school arose and so Westminster school was created in 1540.
Westminster’s landmarks still stand proudly as monuments of the past. However, it’s not just the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and the Abbey that make the area so fascinating and alluring. Other beauties such as Buckingham Palace demonstrate Westminster’s captivating history of kings and queens, whilst St James Park spans 23 hectares in the heart of the borough. The lake, surrounded by green spaces, stands out as a little bit of tranquillity in an area that is known for its relentless hustle and bustle.
Located nearby, stands a monument to one of Britain’s greatest naval captains, Lord Nelson. His statue towers above us in Trafalgar Square, guarded by four lions and alongside fountains erected in his honour. For even more of a sense of history there’s the Churchill War Rooms where you can discover all of Churchill’s strategies during that troubling part of the 20th century. Or, if art is more to your taste, why not take a stroll round the National Gallery or the Tate Britain and soak up some of these pivotal works of art?
